Pay for most functions on Twitter is competitive with Big Tech companies like Facebook.
Business Insider scoured 2021 data for thousands of jobs to find out how much Twitter pays.
Across Twitter, workers are earning six figures, though some roles offer much higher pay.
Many of Twitter’s key employees earn the same salary as big tech companies like Facebook and Google, if not a little more every now and then.
A typical software engineer on Twitter can earn a salary of $255,000 and a senior engineering manager can earn upwards of $270,000, about the same as Facebook pays and even more than Google, depending on experience level. according to the given year’s salary. Insider pulled the information from more than 1,000 work visa applications that Twitter filed with the US government in 2021.
These numbers are just the base salary. Like most rival tech companies, Twitter’s total compensation packages include generous upfront grants of restricted stock units, often equal to salary, that are “renewed” after annual performance reviews. While Twitter’s stock has been down for several months, prompting some workers to consider going elsewhere due to the effect on their pay, the ongoing saga of Elon Musk attempting a hostile takeover of Twitter has had a positive impact on the company: His shares are on high. Twitter employees might not be too happy when it comes to Musk, but his stock is worth more is a plus.
So how much exactly do other Twitter employees earn?
It depends on the job, of course, and as remote work has become more common, to some extent, where the worker is based. Twitter, the first technology company to allow permanent remote work, now has full-time employees in 23 states, including Utah, Indiana, Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Dakota. The change in wages appears to be less dramatic among higher-cost-of-living states like California than it is on Facebook. A Twitter software engineer in Georgia earns $171,000 in salary, visa data shows, which is average for the job. A senior software engineer in California earns only $10,000 more. Another engineer in Florida earns at the higher end of the scale at $218,000.
Visa information has limitations. It only covers work for which Twitter is hiring from other countries. No share grants are included in the data, nor is experience and its influence on compensation. Still, it provides a solid view of the company’s pay scale.
