The defamation trial between Depp and Heard began Monday, April 11, in Fairfax, Virginia, following Depp’s lawsuit against his ex-wife in March 2019. Depp is arguing that she defamed him in a December editorial. 2018 published in The Washington Post titled “I Speak Out Against Sexual Violence – and I Faced the Wrath of Our Culture. That has to change”.
Depp said, “I was a mess, I was a wreck, I was shaking” while trying to avoid Ms. heard.
He added that he poured two or three “strong drops of vodka”, adding that it was the “first taste of alcohol I’ve had in a long time”.
The actor said that Ms. Heard yelled “oh you’re drinking again” when she found him.
“She walked up to me, took the bottle of vodka and then just stepped back and shot me,” he said. “It went right through my head and hit me behind.”
Depp testified that he grabbed another larger bottle of vodka and poured himself another shot while Heard was “throwing insults left, right and center.”
“She then took the bottle and threw it at me,” Depp said, demonstrating to the jury how he was sitting at the moment. He said his fingers were resting on the edge of the bar and that the large bottle of vodka “made contact and broke everywhere”.
“I didn’t feel any pain at first,” he said. “I felt hot and like something was running down my hand.”
“I was looking directly at my bones coming out,” he added. “The blood was just gushing out.”
“I don’t know what a nervous breakdown looks like, but this is probably the closest I’ve ever been,” he said. “Nothing made sense and I knew in my mind and in my heart that this is not life.”
“No one should have to go through this,” he added.
Being in the midst of something like a nervous breakdown, Depp said he began “writing on the walls in my own blood”.
“Little reminders from our past that essentially represented lies she told me and lies I caught her in,” he said, adding that he hid in a bathroom and texted his doctor.
Showing the severed finger to the court, Depp said the bones were “crushed” and that it looked like “Vesuvius”, likely referring to the Italian volcano.
Depp said he couldn’t remember what Heard said after seeing his injury.
“It was almost like white noise, just someone screaming,” he said. “It was just a constant, high-pitched onslaught of insults, it was just words confused at me at a very high frequency and I was a little shocked.”
In her 2018 editorial, Heard wrote in part that “like many women, I had been harassed and sexually assaulted in college. But I kept silent – I didn’t expect the filing of grievances to bring justice. And I didn’t see myself as a victim.”
“Two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse and felt the full force of our culture’s anger at women speaking out,” she added at the time.
Although Depp is not named in the piece, his legal team argues that it contains a “clear implication that Depp is a domestic abuser”, which they say is “categorically and demonstrably false”. Depp is seeking damages of “no less than $50 million.”
