Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s former talent agent testified that he was not aware of any film roles that Depp may have lost as a result of his ex-wife’s 2018 editorial.
But talent agent Christian Carino added that he believes Heard’s abuse allegations cost Depp the job of playing Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth installment of the series. Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The defamation trial between Depp and Heard began Monday, April 11, in Fairfax, Virginia, following Depp’s lawsuit against his ex-wife in March 2019. Depp is arguing that she defamed him in the December 2019 editorial. 2018 published in The Washington Post titled “I Speak Out Against Sexual Violence – and I Faced the Wrath of Our Culture. That has to change”.
Heard’s attorney, Elaine Bredehost, asked Carino, who previously represented both Depp and Heard, which specific legal case affected Depp’s career the most.
“My opinion is that Amber’s accusations would have the most dramatic impact on her off-screen reputation. I’m not talking about any specific accusations,” said Carino, who started working for Depp in late 2016.
When asked to clarify what he meant by “accusations”, he said, “I mean the things she accused Johnny of doing… that were made public”.
Mrs Bredehoft asked Mr Carino whether he knows how an article in the The sun The paper, which led to an earlier UK libel trial, affected Depp’s career, which Carino said he didn’t know about.
He also said he doesn’t know that the 2018 editorial in Opposite cost Mr. Depp any film work.
Bredehoft asked Carino if Depp has missed out on any film roles since he started working for the actor.
“I would say yes,” he said. “The next Pirates movie.” He noted that Depp played Jack Sparrow in five previous films in the franchise and that he thinks he lost the role in the sixth film because of Heard’s allegations of abuse.
He added that he bases this belief on conversations he’s had with people in the film industry. He remembered talking to pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and that Disney was having trouble hiring Depp.
Bredehoft asked if Bruckheimer said why Disney got in trouble.
“No, not specifically, but it was understood,” Carino said.
In her 2018 editorial, Heard wrote that “like many women, I had been harassed and sexually assaulted when I was in college. But I kept silent – I didn’t expect the filing of grievances to bring justice. And I didn’t see myself as a victim.”
“Two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse and felt the full force of our culture’s anger at women speaking out,” she added at the time.
Although Depp is not named in the piece, his legal team argues that it contains a “clear implication that Depp is a domestic abuser”, which they say is “categorically and demonstrably false”. Depp is seeking damages of “no less than $50 million.”
Heard has filed a $100 million counterclaim against Depp for nuisance and immunity from his allegations.
