Lectric’s new folding mid-drive ebike has 100-mile range for $1999

The Lectric XP 2.0 ebike was one of the best bargains we tested, with a powerful engine, folding frame, and decent components for a thousand dollars. But while the XP 2.0 is an all-in-one ebike for people who just want to get from point A to B, Lectric’s newest ebike, the XPremium, seeks to add value to a higher performance stand.

I haven’t had a chance to test the XPremium yet, but I did a double take when I saw the specs and components offered for $1,999 ($1,799 for the first few days).

The bike has three features that are rare for the price range and almost unheard of in a folding bike: a mid-drive motor, a torque sensor, and nearly 1,000 Wh of battery capacity.

This is also not a case of crowdfunding shenanigans. The bike is available for pre-order on the Lectric website now and should ship in June. The rest of the specs look solid too:

  • 500W mid-drive motor (800W peak)
  • torque sensor
  • Dual 48V 10.4 Ah batteries for a total of 998.4 Wh
  • A shift sensor detects when you shift gears to minimize stress on the powertrain
  • Maximum speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) (can be set to lower speeds)
  • A throttle (very rare on mid-drive bikes)
  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • 20 x 4” Chaoyang tires filled with Slime sealant to prevent punctures
  • Oil front suspension with 80mm travel
  • Integrated headlight (it’s the same premium update I tested on XP 2.0 and it’s better than average)
  • Rear rack included
  • Frame-mounted front rack for added sturdiness
  • Arrives fully assembled

Going back to the engine, mid-drive units are typically only found on ebikes close to $3,000 because they are more expensive and complex than traditional hub units. We’ve looked at their various benefits in this article, but the gist is that they tend to create a cycling experience that feels more like riding a regular bike.

Unlike hub motors, mid-drive motors are able to upshift your bike gears for optimal efficiency, making them superior for climbing hills and maximizing range. They also help distribute weight towards the center of the bike for better handling.

The caveat is that the hub motor puts more pressure on the powertrain, but the shift sensor on the XPremium should mitigate this issue.

The other reason why mid-drive ebikes are generally much smoother than hub-drive motors is that most of them have built-in torque sensors. A traditional cadence sensor turns on and off like a switch when you start pedaling, but a torque sensor actually detects how Difficult you are pedaling to provide proportionate assistance. He knows you need more help when you’re going up a steep hill than when you’re traveling on a flat road, for example.

It’s true that not all mid-drive motors are created equal, and implementation matters too. But while Lectric doesn’t specify the engine’s brand on its website, close inspection shows that it bears the Wuxi TruckRun label. The only other bike I’ve tested with a TruckRun engine is the Priority Current, and this is one of the best ebikes I’ve ever ridden thanks to its smooth power delivery and massive amount of torque. Unfortunately, this one costs $3,300.

Lectric may be using a different variant of the TruckRun and may not have the same fine tuning of the power curve as the Priority ebike. But if the experience is similar to that of the Current, pilots will be delighted. At the very least, it should be an improvement over XP 2.0’s somewhat jerky ride.

I also have to applaud the massive battery setup; 1,000 Wh is huge. Typical ebikes have half that, and I’ve only seen a few folding ebikes with that kind of range. The few that have similarly large batteries didn’t have a mid-drive motor or torque sensor. The XPremium is practically a unicorn in the ebike world.

Lectric claims you’ll be able to get over 161 km (100 miles) of range at lower assistance levels or 80 km (50 miles) without pedaling. Considering I’ve achieved over 40 miles on Current on a 500 Wh battery, this estimate seems realistic. But for most people who don’t do regular century rides, the real benefit will be using higher assist without having range anxiety – or simply not having to carry the bike every day.
