Netflix launches ad-supported service and invents television

Netflix finally got it. Years of innovation, expansion, and research and development have finally led to this momentous occasion: the emergence of television. On a recent earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings revealed that the company plans to introduce cheaper subscription plans that are ad-supported. So, you know, television.

Fortunately, it still won’t implement ads in general. Instead, this will be a cheaper plan available to those who can tolerate ads to pay less money each month. Again, this is just normal television. The MCU also rediscovered the lost art of rear projection – a technology popularized in the 1930s.

As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Hastings said, “Those who follow Netflix know that I’m against the complexity of advertising and I’m a big fan of subscription simplicity. A big fan of consumer choice. And allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are tolerant of advertising to get what they want makes a lot of sense.”

It looks like he also wants to reassure people that Netflix ads won’t incur further tracking of customer data. “In terms of profit potential, the online ad market has definitely advanced and now you don’t have to incorporate all the information about people you used to have.”

Netflix stayed away from ads from the start, but with the loss of subscribers for the first time in more than a decade, the company needs to adapt if it wants to continue growing and retaining customers.

It launched a new gaming service available at no extra cost, but the launch was not all it could have been. However, it’s still growing its roster with games like Exploding Kittens and utilizing existing franchises like Trivia Quest.

Netflix is ‚Äč‚Äčalso expected to crack down on people sharing passwords among family and friends, which seems like a phenomenally bad move and something that will only drive more people away from the service. Fortunately, ads don’t seep into current subscription levels, as that would certainly annoy many customers.
