The Sooners know how to be comfortable on the road.

When they are on a bus or plane, they spend time watching movies together. The 1993 film Tombstone is the most common selection.

When they’re at the hotel, they have a nice meal before relaxing with some video games. Unsurprisingly, MLB The Show is a fan favorite.

This routine became the norm for OU during their nomadic postseason. After winning the Big 12 Tournament title in Arlington, Texas, the Sooners continued their tour by winning the Gainesville Regional and Blacksburg Super Regional.

“It’s comfortable for us,” Crooks said Wednesday. “We were really made to play on the road. I don’t think it really bothers us as a team. I think that makes us a little stronger.”

On Friday, Crooks and the Sooners felt right at home on the biggest stage ever.

The OU kicked off their run in the College World Series with a 13-8 victory over #5 Texas A&M at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. The Sooners made an opening statement by scoring seven runs in the second round, and Crooks made the exclamation point.

Oklahoma’s Jackson Nicklaus (15) celebrates his grand slam with Wallace Clark (6), Jimmy Crooks and Tanner Tredway during the fourth inning.

After a two-run single from Blake Robertson and an RBI single from Tanner Tredaway extended the lead to 5-0, Crooks stole the show by throwing a three-run home run over the wall in right field.

“I thought we set the table too early,” said OU coach Skip Johnson. “I am very proud of the young people for fighting and pushing themselves field to field.”

A three-run homer by Texas A&M’s Jordan Thompson reduced the deficit to 8-3 at the bottom of the frame, but rookie Jackson Nicklaus kept OU in charge.

The Sooners carried the bases at the top of the third inning, when Nicklaus sent a kick into right field. All the Aggies’ outfielders could do was watch as he flew over their heads for a grand slam.

“I knew I wasn’t going to be late for the fastball,” Nicklaus said. “I’ve been working a lot on that, working on pitch diagnosis, separating balls and hits. I saw the offhand shot, a good fastball, and I tried to swing it well.”

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Jake Bennett kept the Texas A&M attack contained. He ended the day with three strikeouts and four runs lost in six innings, but the floodgates opened when he came off the mound.

The Aggies racked up four runs at the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 12-8 contest. They got a trio of RBI singles, and they all came with two strikes.

But it wasn’t enough.

A double RBI from John Spikerman at the top of the ninth increased the OU lead to 13-8, and Trevin Michael did the rest. The graduate transfer ensured the final elimination, causing Jack Moss to fly out.

“I was just trying to launch with a lead the whole time,” Michael said. “I wasn’t really trying to go in there and finish everyone off or anything. And it was very easy for me to adapt to leadership like that.”

Nicklaus finished with four RBIs and two runs with 1-for-3 hits. Crooks and Robertson each added three RBIs, while 1-for-4 and 1-for-5 on the board, respectively.

OR advances to face the No. 9 Texas and Notre Dame on Sunday at 6pm. The Sooners will be without junior redshirt Brett Squires, who broke his hand on Friday after being hit by a pitch in the third inning.
