Players debate whether to invert the Y axis, not reach consensus on which way is up

Players are debating whether to invert the Y-axis on their controllers, but after days of arguing, they remain stuck in an impasse when it comes to which way to go. And down.

The crux of the matter is how players prefer to configure their controllers. While normal entries have players pressing down to look down and pressing up to look up, the Y axis can often be inverted so that pressing down looks up and pressing up looks down.

The news comes from an ongoing survey on Resetera. “It’s time to take another snapshot of this most pressing issue,” said the original poster, Oni-link. “Is it up, up or up, down? Personally, I’m inverted for life. If I want to look down, I always press the stick up. I was just born like this. Shout out to games that start by asking you to look up or down and then automatically reverse the controller if you press an inverted direction on the controller.”

Possible responses to the poll include “up is down and down is up” and “up is up is down is down” in addition to “I am a coward and I refuse to answer”. To date, 760 players have responded “up is low and low is high”, 814 players have responded “up is high and low is low” and 15 players have admitted that “I am a coward and I refuse to answer. “In other words, the issue is still largely up for debate.

Players, unsurprisingly, were divided in their opinions on the matter. The first comment in the poll was “inversion is perversion”. Oni-link later noted how “the real sick are the people who invert the X axis”, courting even more controversy.

Some speculate that age may be the deciding factor in things. User known as Triggerhappytel said, “Personally, I think the inversion is age-based. Older people will likely be inverted because that’s how most games used to be and there were fewer options to change it, whereas I think younger people would lean towards non-inverts.” Triggerhappytel added that “by the way, I’m almost 40 years old and inverted forever.” The user who goes by the name Cursed Knowledge quickly replied that “if you use inverted controls, I’m already assuming you are over 35 (aka old)”. Several users have commented on how they just flip the flight controls. “Only for flying games,” said the user who calls himself Thaquoth. “If I’m not in some kind of flying vehicle situation, up is up.” The sentiment was echoed by several other users.

The discussion is still ongoing, despite having lasted for days. The result is that players may, in fact, never reach a consensus on the question of which way is up and which is down.
