Sen. John Cornyn Booed at Texas Republican Party Convention

Republican Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) was booed at the Republican Party’s annual convention in his home state on Friday for his work with Democrats to achieve “bipartisan” gun control.

“Well, it looks like Texas Republicans aren’t fans of Cornyn’s anti-2A law,” said one Twitter user. “The entire convention center erupted in boos when Cornyn took the stage.”

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called on Cornyn to work with Senate Democrats to achieve “bipartisan” gun control following the Uvalde school shooting. However, conservatives were frustrated with Cornyn’s efforts after reports that gun control legislation would encourage states to enact red flag laws.

These “red flag” laws would allow law enforcement authorities to confiscate weapons from individuals deemed an immediate threat to others after receiving reports about an individual.

However, Cornyn has spoken out against these incentives for red flag laws after receiving backlash from conservatives across the country.

“The existence or lack of a ‘red flag’ law should not affect any state’s ability to receive funds for crisis intervention,” Cornyn said in a statement Tuesday.

The Texas senator said that if states want to implement such laws, they “should not be able to do so unless their red flag law contains a full set of due process and Bill of Rights protections in the Constitution.”

Despite Cornyn’s attempt to clarify his work with Democrats on gun control legislation, the Texas GOP convention crowd still booed him before, during, and when his speech ended.

“Did you really think you could show up here after ‘Negotiating’ to breach our 2A, and we’d be fine with that…NO,” one Twitter user he wrote.

The crowd on Friday reportedly shouted “no red flags” and “tell Cornyn no” as he spoke.

“When Cornyn talks about electing a new leadership, people scream ‘like Cornyn’”, NPR’s Sergio Martínez-Beltrán tweeted.

“US Senator John Cornyn is violently booed during much of his speech here at the Texas Republican Party Convention. Here are final comments from him and the cascade of boos,” he said. Houston Chronicle reporter Jeremy Wallace tweeted.

Cornyn was apparently unfazed by the boos from the crowd, according to a tweet he shared on his account.

“After Sen @JohnCornyn was met with so much hate at the @TexasGOP convention in Houston I was told he told some people ‘I never gave in to crowds and I won’t start today,’” Cornyn retweeted to read.
