Soulstorm Epic Games Store exclusivity ends soon

When the Strange world The platform game series debuted in 1997 on PC and the original PlayStation, it became a phenomenon. In total, there were four titles released in the original series, which stopped receiving new entries in 2005, much to the disappointment of many Abe fans. So, when Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, a complete remake of the first title, released in 2014, many gamers were excited about the franchise’s revival. But Strange World: Storm of Souls, a remake of the second game, didn’t see the light of day until nearly seven years later, and its release left two portions of the player population feeling a bit left out.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Strange World: Storm of Souls released on PS5 as a free title for PS Plus subscribers and as an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC. The launch of the PlayStation wasn’t necessarily surprising, as the first two titles in the franchise were exclusive to Sony’s console, and so many people associated it with the company. However, the game being available on PC only on the Epic Games Store has not been particularly well-received, as many gamers are still unhappy with Epic’s vigorous pursuit of exclusivity deals, a practice that some consider anti-consumer.

It is likely, therefore, that many PC gamers and fans of the Strange world franchise will be happy to hear that the Epic Games Store exclusivity deal ends soon. A video released by developer Oddworld Inhabitants on April 20 is simply titled: “Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition – COMING SOON ON STEAM.” The short trailer showcases some of the awards and high review scores Strange World: Storm of Souls received, cuts scenes to showcase the stunning state-of-the-art graphics, and showcases the varied gameplay.

Although a sequel to the 2014 remake Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, Oddworld: Soulstorm is a retelling of Abe’s exodus instead of a direct remake. Abe’s Exodus, the second original entry in the series, has always been considered a spin-off title. Storm of Souls, on the other hand, it is sometimes subtitled “As originally intended”. The game features entirely new areas, introduces game mechanics not present in Abe’s Exodus, and some parts of the title look completely different from the original. Storm of Souls was described by the developer as a “complete retake of the story inspired by our original tale”.

the game version coming to Steam in the near future will be the Strange World: Storm of Souls Enhanced Edition released November 2021. This version has tweaked gameplay mechanics, improved enemy and follower AI, plus seven months of extra polish. The enhanced edition of the game also features two exclusive bonus levels: Vykkers Labs for Xbox and Toby’s Escape for PlayStation and Epic Games Store versions. It’s unclear whether the Steam version will also feature Toby’s Escape, though it seems safe to assume it will.

Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
