Top 10 Pokemon with the scariest designs, ranked

pokemon introduced us to over 900 different types of creatures with unique personalities and abilities. However, despite most of them being cute, loved and adored by many, some are downright scary. Some Pokémon designs may have scared trainers away in the past (myself included), which showed that maybe not all of them have to look cute and innocent. Perhaps this is Pokémon’s way of sowing fear in enemies and predators.

But of all the different Pokemon out there, only a handful can be seen as scary. So, out of 900+ Pokemon, here are the top 10 with the scariest designs, ranked.

10. Sable

Sableye’s design is scary if you’re in dark places. This Pokémon has dark purple skin and sharp teeth and has gemstones for eyes. They are known to be mischievous in caves and the gem on their chest grows when mega-evolves. But despite his creepy and mischievous behavior, all he wants is a friend.

9. Mimikyu

Mimikyu has got to be the scariest Pika clone in the Pokémon franchise. His entire body is hidden in a cloth that must look like Pikachu just so he can be loved by trainers. Remove the cloth and you are told that you will not live another day to regret it. While adorable, it’s still creepy due to its ragdoll appearance. And if you think this isn’t scary enough, it’s a Z move Pokemon Sun and Moon it’s even scarier. It envelops the opponent in the guise of rags and attacks him from within. Not to mention the name of the Z-move is “let’s snuggle together forever”… *shudders*.

8. Wishiwashi

You might think this Water-type Pokémon is cute and adorable, but don’t let appearances fool you. This Pokémon will transform into its “school form”, turning it into a monstrous giant fish. It was designed to look like a flock of fish turned into one, giving the term “safety in numbers” a whole new meaning. It is also said that when this Pokémon is in its school form, it can overcome the power of the toughest water-type creatures, including Gyarados.

7. Ditto

There is a rumor in the Pokémon games that Ditto were Mew’s failed experiments. But that’s not what makes this Pokémon scary in design. It’s a cute, genderless blob that can transform into any Pokémon it sees (and human in Detective Pikachu). But that’s not all: most Ditto transformations will have the copy keeping their original eyes, giving Coraline vibrations. Imagine seeing a fluffy, cuddly Pokémon, only to have its beady eyes stare into your soul.

6. Gigantamax Garbodor

Imagine this. You are fighting another trainer. They bring their last Pokémon, Garbodor, a six-foot-long junk Pokémon. Suddenly, this tall pile of junk gets even bigger, 10 times bigger. It’s technically the size of a living garbage dump. This energized form is not only 10x smelly and large, but it also absorbs ships, cars, and buildings into its body. This big, scary Pokémon is a reminder of what happens if we don’t dispose of our trash properly.

5. Galarian Slowdown

You know those horror stories about parasites taking over the host body and controlling it to do their bidding? This is Slowking Galarian. Unlike the first iteration of Slowking where he and Shelder are just coexisting with each other, in this version Shelder can take control of Galarian Slowpoke. His intelligence skyrockets and apparently in the anime, Shelder can possess other trainers. Talk about a parasitic relationship.

4. Parasite

Speaking of parasitic relationships, Parasect is similar in that it has a parasitic mushroom on its head. According to its Pokédex entry, the Parasect mushroom has taken over the host’s body, and if it is removed, the body no longer moves. Its design is similar to real-life fungi, as mushrooms have tendencies to take over the host’s body — particularly insects, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. You know how scary these Pokemon looked just to find them constantly in the wild if you played Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

3. Ariados

This Pokémon is not good for those with arachnophobia. Whether you’re playing the main games or this pop-up creature in spin-off titles like pokemon ranger, seeing this big spider Pokemon is enough to make your console scared. Also, this Pokémon is one meter tall. Most real-life spiders are 30 centimeters at most. It’s not a fun Pokemon for anyone who doesn’t like spiders.

2. Redrago

Unlike all of Regi’s designs, Regidrago has to be the most terrifying. This small-bodied Pokémon is said to have the power of all Dragon-type Pokémon combined. Not only that, people feared the destruction Regidrago would cause if he were able to fully form his entire body, hence the reason he was sealed away.

1. Galarian Corsola/Cursola

Galarian Corsola and its evolution form Cursola have to be the saddest and scariest Pokémon ever created. Unlike the normal Corsola, this one appears to be dying as its color is faded. Not to mention that when it evolves into Cursola, the body looks like a ghost floating over its destroyed body. Quite morbid and a gentle reminder of global warming.

Just because one person finds these Pokémon scary doesn’t mean they can’t be loved by someone else. Some of these Pokémon are fan favorites of other trainers for reasons other than their appearance. But regardless, these Pokemon are scary and it’s up to the trainer to be able to look beyond their appearance and see them for their potential.
