Well, here’s a headline I never thought I’d write, and yet with the events of episode 8 of the Halo show last week, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. And with the way the series is going, I wouldn’t pass up the Paramount Plus show to take such a seemingly absurd turn. We are already most of the way.
To recap, the UNSC has captured a young human woman named Makee, who has been raised by the Covenant her entire life and hates humanity. As the Master Chief, she has the special power to interact with ancient artifacts, and this has created a bond between them now that they’ve met in person.
That bond morphs into literal romance, and last week brought us a sex scene where the Master Chief (presumably losing his virginity, due to the way the Spartan program works) hooks up with his POW in his cell. Consensually, but… still. It’s weird on about ten different levels. Oh, and Cortana and probably Halsey are watching as this happens.
What keeps going through my mind is…why? Why do that? There could easily be a case where the Master Chief and Makee bond and he convinces her to turn her back on the Covenant and help humanity. without have sex with her?
I suppose you could say this was to show her full understanding of human emotion, now with her suppression chip removed, or to teach spy Cortana about human love (lust?). But now I’m worried that the reason for the sex scene could be that the Master Chief might have gotten Makee pregnant, which would turn into a turning point for Season 2. Yes, Spartans must be sterile, but for sure we’re already breaking every Spartan rule on this show, so who knows.
Why do I think this might be where this is going? Some reasons.
First, I’ve seen this happen on TV before. I was particularly impressed on The Walking Dead when, out of nowhere, the show decided it was time for an actual sex scene between Michonne and Rick Grimes. Okay, they were a couple, it made sense. And yet the reason they showed that the scene was to make it clear later that Rick had impregnated Michonne before disappearing. Call this the Chekov Connection.
So I wonder the same is happening here, plus the added complications of the Halo show. Both Master Chief and Makee have special powers that other humans don’t (again, this isn’t a game thing). As such, this could mean that a child produced by the two could still be more Special. The ultimate “Chosen”.
I can also see it as the show’s writers trying to do the best form of “humanizing” the Master Chief with this, what they’ve tried all season, as what’s more “humanizing” than giving him a child or one daughter? (at least in your mind). And then, as Makee instantly becomes a villain again, I can see her leaving to join the Covenant in season two, and the Master Chief will have to find her to retrieve her son and save him from the Covenant.
This is bad? Of course it’s bad! But now we’re watching a series where the Master Chief had sex with a POW and the trust he places in her as a result is poised to lead the entire Fall of Reach. So we’re a long way off now, and Master Chief having a child doesn’t feel as insane as it once did. Well, he’s still insane, but not for this series.
Boy, can I wait for that ending.
