Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s file size is a logical progression

A few days ago, Nintendo revealed the file sizes for three of its upcoming titles: Nintendo Switch Sports (now available), Splatoon 3and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Fans were surprised to find that the latest addition to the xenoblade series will require 15GB for download at launch.

If this is true, it means Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be the biggest Switch exclusive yet. pokemon sword and Shield was 10.3 GB, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had a 13.4GB base game. Those with regular Nintendo Switch or Switch Lite consoles will find the game consuming around 47% of their internal storage, while OLED owners will only lose around 23% of their storage space. But the size of the next Xenoblade Chronicles sequel shouldn’t be a surprise.

The case of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 file size

The main reason why Xenoblade Chronicles 3The file size makes sense because players have seen this happen before. Longer sequences are not an uncommon phenomenon; for example, the first game on CD Projekt Red’s The magician series was 15 GB, followed by The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings at 25 GB, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt at 35GB. Even so, the largest game size available on the Nintendo eShop is NBA 2K21 at almost 40 GB, following NBA 2K20 consuming almost 33 GB of space.

To compare, the file size for Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is 13.7 GB, while Xenoblade Chronicles 2 takes up 13.2GB of space on the Switch. While it may seem like the games decrease in size as the series progresses, it should be noted that the original Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii U it was around 6.5GB – making the sequel more than double the size of its predecessor. For this reason, it stands to reason that the third game in the series will be bigger than the previous games.

The file size of 15 GB for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 should be a surprise for the opposite reason, as it’s actually much smaller than a sequel is expected to be in many cases. Monolith Soft has managed to create a sequel that is just a few gigabytes larger than the second game, when the latter was, again, just over twice the size of the original Wii U game. At the time of writing, exactly what improvements Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has about its predecessor is unknown.

Sequels are more often larger than any previous game in their series because their stories get more complex, their worlds get bigger, and the game’s graphics naturally become more detailed and sophisticated over the years. Along with these progressions, studios tend to add new characters to their games’ sequels, as with Xenoblade Chronicles 3The dual protagonists of Noah and Mio. In the case of this next xenoblade game is said to combine elements of both of its predecessors, which were largely unconnected.

All these details are reflected with the ever-increasing sizes of modern games and why gamers will find that extra storage becomes more critical regardless of their platform. With that said, fans looking forward to the next Xenoblade Chronicles must make sure they have enough space before the game’s surprise release date. Fortunately, there are plenty of micro SD cards with large storage sizes on the market to complement the Switch’s small internal storage.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be released on July 29, 2022 for Nintendo Switch.
